Many cool things are possible this year, let’s take a closer look …
Company of Heroes (Real-Time Historical Wargame)
Release: Early 2020
(Embed) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1TyiitIz38 (/ embed)
Company of Heroes is an oldie but a goodie, and Feral is slowly documenting their development process with blog updates. Starting with D-Day and beyond, the game is about the crucial battles of the Second World War in the European theater. It will be excellent, but without early access or excessive talking, the exact time frame on this copy is difficult to determine. However, it would come out in December 2019, so it can’t be far away.
Commandos 2 (Squad Tactics / Strategy)
Release: Deployment of the TBA in console / PC
(Embed) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tb90nBvuwl4 (/ embed)
Commandos 2 is taking its sweet time, but it will be a painful sight when it debuts in 2020. The delays of the game are due to his ambitions, because in addition to refining his control schedule, it also wants to launch on consoles and PC. It is a combination of squad command and RTS and manages to merge historical scenarios with detailed characters and specializations …
Rebel Cops (Tactical Strategy)
Release: “Soon” (from Nov 2019)
The mobile version of the spin-off to This is the Police was announced last November – essentially doubling on the tactical layer of the horrifying Police drama. The player must lead a “ragtag police team in rebellion against the new criminal power of their city.” The game is already on the PC if you want to watch it, otherwise you will soon be looking forward to the iOS and Android release.
Fury of Dracula (board game)
This was one of the first announcements of 2020. Apart from their newly found independence, Nomad Games are advancing with gumption. They have been licensed by Games Workshop to develop a digital version of the fourth edition of Fury of Dracula, a classic asymmetrical board game from the late 80s. We know that a mobile port is ‘likely’. but we are not sure what the timetable will be in terms of platforms and in which order. We are currently optimistic for a release in 2020, but you never know.
Roll for the Galaxy Digital (board game)
Release: Beta active, full release TBC 2020
Not much is known about this, except Temple Gates. They have made some decent board game gates in the past, so chances are that they are pretty decent. They accepted beta sign-ups early December 2019, so with a bit of luck it won’t take much longer before we see them on our mobile shelves.
Slay the Spire (Card Game / Roguelike)
Release: Early 2020
We expected this to fall last year, but in December the developers said the mobile port should be postponed to 2020 so that they could complete the console version, allowing the mobile version to be implemented faster and more smoothly. However, we were told “early” 2020, so hopefully it won’t be long.
Dire Wolf Digital
Riot is not the only company with the potential to conquer 2020 (see below) – Dire Wolf Digital still has a number of licenses that they will develop. They recently released Yellow & Yangtze at the end of 2019, but we are not sure in which order they want to tackle the rest of them. Just to summarize what they are working on:
- Mage Knight (board game, classic)
- Wings of Glory (Board game, Historical)
- Sagrada (board game, aesthetics)
- Root (board game, asymmetrical)
A REL OF COLOR … with lots of things from Riot Games
Teamfight Tactics Mobile (Autobattler)
Release: Mid March 2020
(Embed) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liNLLx874g4 (/ embed)
This is confirmed to come to mobile earlier than later this year. It’s nice when the boilerplate takes over the 2019 Auto Chess, with hexes instead of a square grid layout and a battle roulette design for equipment build-up. More swinging, no less, in an already chaotic genre for something that is apparently based on “Chess”.
Legends of Runeterra (CCG)
Release: TBA 2020
(Embed) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDPhHpyZIck (/ embed)
Riot’s (incredibly late) answer to Hearthstone. The other year it felt like MOBAs were the mobile hotness, now the shoe is on the other side and anyone with a franchise is eager to pump out a card fighter. The rule quirk here is the phase system that sees players take turns attacking every other turn. An open beta will hit the PC later this month if someone wants to try it out there, because it will be cross-platform with mobile at the launch, so your progress will be transferred.
League of Legends: Wild Rift (MOBA)
Release: TBA 2020
(Embed) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2TZAAQmGho (/ embed)
A true mobile version of Legaue or Legends for our phones, which keeps much of the original alive. It is a twin-stick control schedule with a slimmed down schedule. So no clone or gate, but tweaked to be as close as possible. Images and early impressions are hard to find, as this is now beta, but it can be a great replacement for the dedicated fans of LoL.
The best of the rest
EVE echoes (MMO / Simulation)
Release: Currently in Beta. Full release at the end of 2020
(Embed) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kw6BcQtszj0 (/ embed)
This EVE Online spin-off is far in its beta test. Functions are added slowly, but early feedback indicates that the large, far-reaching scope of the classic Eve with a minimum of the necessary cropping to make it work on mobile. Slowly, steadily, it will grow into the second life in sci-fi that its parent game offers. Large military and economic campaigns coordinated with a large number of other players.
Runescape Mobile (MMO)
Release: TBA 2020, Early Access now available.
(Embed) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThVgKqHZFe8 (/ embed)
As the video above trumpeted, Runescape Mobile is currently in Early Access on Google Play. However, it is a ride with early access, though, with iOS and a full launch even before the books for later this year. Not to be confused with Oldschool Runescape, this MMO is accessible and cross-platform and wants to innovate as much as possible and benefit from the deep-rooted nostalgia of people for the web experience of the original.
Diablo Immortal (Action RPG)
Release: TBA 2020
(Embed) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wmQm0qhZ94 (/ embed)
Project is still alive and kicking from BlizzCon 2019, but updates are scarce and far between. Quality Action RPGs are scarce, so it will inevitably attract interest as soon as it debuts. In the meantime, the genre has been diversified and evolved, which is with the announcement of Path of Exile 2. Based on the level of polishing in the trailer, there is probably a release this year in the cards, but for now Blizzard plays this close to the coffin , without additional information or access outside of their announcements.
Minecraft Earth (Augmented Reality / Location-Based)
Release: Early Access available, full release 2020
(Embed) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TzDT3bcPTU (/ embed)
It is now available in Early Access in most major areas, although the ‘full’ release will only appear later in 2020. The creative sandbox aspect of this only gets stronger with the augmented reality elements. Become a global time sink for the artisan type. This is more an open end, rolling early entry that literally sweeps around the world. 1.0 cannot come fast enough, and if Mojang knows to seize the moment, it will be here this year.
